Audemars Piguet x Swatch “Royal Pop” Launch Cancelled in Dubai After Crowd Safety Concerns

The much-hyped UAE debut of the Audemars Piguet x Swatch “Royal Pop” collaboration was called off on launch day, after enormous crowds turned up at Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates well before opening hours. Swatch confirmed via its regional Instagram account that the sale was being cancelled at both locations on public safety grounds, with no new launch date announced.

A Frenzy That Started Before Sunrise

Footage circulating on TikTok and Instagram showed long queues snaking through both malls’ parking areas and walkways from as early as 6:00am. Reports described chaotic scenes, with some collectors arriving in the middle of the night to secure a spot in line.

Many UAE buyers had travelled in from across the country, expecting a typical first-come-first-served drop. Instead, they were met with confusion, no real-time updates from organisers, and ultimately a cancellation notice as crowd levels grew unsafe.

Disappointment, but Some Relief

The reaction online has been split. A large portion of fans expressed frustration over the lack of crowd management and last-minute communication. Others welcomed the decision, arguing that calling off the event was the right call given how packed the malls had become.

One collector who had spent hours waiting at Mall of the Emirates before relocating to Dubai Mall said the scenes were unmanageable and supported the cancellation — preferring a delay over an unsafe event.

Part of a Bigger Trend

The Royal Pop is the latest in a wave of luxury-meets-mainstream watch collaborations that have transformed traditional watch releases into events more reminiscent of sneaker drops. Following the runaway success of the Swatch x Omega “MoonSwatch” and the more recent Swatch x Blancpain “Scuba Fifty Fathoms” collaborations, demand for these limited drops has surged among collectors, Gen Z buyers, and resellers alike.

Globally, fans have been known to camp outside Swatch stores for days in cities like New York and Toronto. Similar overcrowding concerns have been reported at other Royal Pop launches around the world, including in Mumbai and Delhi, where the release was also pulled.

What Happens Next

So far, neither Audemars Piguet nor Swatch has indicated whether the UAE launch will be rescheduled, moved online, or restructured to better manage crowds. Collectors in the UAE are now waiting on further updates from both brands.

For now, the wait continues — but as one collector put it, safety has to come first.
