When Claire Francis, head of physical education at Nord Anglia International School in Dubai, was diagnosed with stage four cancer 18 months ago, her family’s world changed overnight. Hospital appointments, major surgery, chemotherapy and radiation quickly replaced the rhythm of ordinary life for Claire, her husband David Gairn, and their three young children.
But alongside the fear and uncertainty, something remarkable began to unfold. A handful of friends reaching out to offer support gradually grew into a movement that has drawn in teachers, parents, students, rugby players and complete strangers from across the Emirates and beyond.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Speaking to Gulf News, Gairn said the family was initially overwhelmed by the reality of what lay ahead. Since the diagnosis, Claire has undergone surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and countless consultations, with the family seeking expert opinions from specialists in the UAE, UK, Germany and Turkey to explore every option available.
Through it all, Gairn says it is Claire’s own spirit that has carried the family forward, describing her courage and determination as extraordinary. Despite everything, she has continued to be a devoted mother, wife and teacher who still inspires the young people around her.

A Community Rallies Together
The outpouring of support has been especially moving for Claire, reflecting the many lives she has touched over years of teaching and mentoring in Dubai. For her children, including a two-year-old, it has become a living lesson in what happens when a community rallies around a family in need.
That network reaches well beyond the school gates. A former UAE international rugby player and long-serving member of the Dubai Exiles, Gairn is a well-known figure in the country’s rugby scene. As word of Claire’s battle spread, players, coaches and supporters joined the effort — and this week the school hosted a major sports fundraising event that attracted hundreds of participants.

Looking Ahead With Cautious Optimism
Claire recently underwent a biopsy of liver tumours to build an updated genetic profile of her cancer. Those results will be shared with precision oncology specialists abroad and her medical teams in the UAE and Germany, with the aim of pinpointing the most effective, personalised treatment path. As she prepares for the next phase of treatment in Germany, the family is moving forward with what Gairn calls cautious optimism — focused on giving Claire every possible opportunity while making memories together.

It is a reminder that, sometimes, the greatest source of hope isn’t only medical expertise — it’s the strength of a community standing together.
